Committee on Political Education (COPE)
Frequently Asked Questions
What is COPE?
COPE, our Committee on Political Education, is Local 105’s voluntary political action fund, which we use for political and legislative activities at local, state and federal levels.
Why is SEIU involved in politics? Why should I contribute?
Our wages, benefits and job security are decided by elected officials. In our current political climate, we all run the risk of losing quality jobs; for example, budget cuts at state and federal levels mean layoffs not only for our public employees, but for the private workers who provide services to them.
The few dollars you invest in COPE is worth thousands in better wages, benefits and job security. The more money we raise, the better we can protect ourselves against attacks on SEIU members and all working families. To do an effective job, SEIU members must be involved in electing office holders; doing so ensures that we hold elected officials accountable for the actions they take that affect our lives and our jobs.
Do I have a say in where the money goes?
Yes, you have input at every level. Local union COPE committees make recommendations to support candidates running for state and federal offices. Our national political and legislative staff reviews these recommendations and makes decisions in relation to a national, SEIU political strategy. Only candidates endorsed by local members will receive a contribution from SEIU COPE.
Where does the money go?
All of the money goes into a separate, SEIU political account for use in local, state and federal activities—this money does not become a part of the general budget. COPE funds are used for contributions to candidates, voter registration efforts, lobbying and get-out-the-vote efforts. A portion of COPE goes to the federal political fund at the International office for use in Congressional and U.S. Senate races. COPE funds are also used to introduce and pass legislation that improves the lives of SEIU members and their families.
Does SEIU only support candidates who are Democrats?
No. Our priority is to support candidates committed to improving the lives of working people and their families, regardless of their political party.
Does all the money go to federal elections? What about state and local elections?
The money you contribute will be used for local, state and federal political activities.
Who can contribute to COPE?
Federal law limits COPE contributions to working and retired SEIU members and their families, as well as employees of SEIU and their families.
