My only request, made with humility, is to read these words and reflect upon them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris, a vast number of politicians have chosen to stoke the fears of Americans with divisive rhetoric against refugees, Muslims, and in effect, all immigrants. Already, a number of violent threats have been made against Muslims currently living in America.\u00a0<strong>At this moment, it is important that we all remember that we have brothers and sisters in our union who are refugees from war-torn nations, who are Muslim, and are immigrants.<\/strong>\u00a0I cannot, in good conscience, remain silent while this divisive rhetoric\u2014left unchallenged\u2014may become a violent act against one of our members or a fellow American.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While those\u00a0<\/span><a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">pandering politicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0appeal to the legitimate feeling of fear in the wake of these attacks and attempt to inspire the worst in us, I appeal to the best of our shared American values and our deeply shared value of solidarity among trade unionists.\u00a0<strong>I ask you to reflect upon just what would cause you to flee your home with only the possessions you can carry in your hands?<\/strong>\u00a0How bad would it have to be to do so with your children in tow? As a father of two young boys, I can only imagine just how horrific life would have to be to make that terribly hard decision to flee all that I know. Reflecting upon these questions can help each of us to think about our common humanity and our value of solidarity; as the Syrian refugees are demonized by others. It also reminds me of the powerful words from the Bible, Luke 6:31 \u201cDo unto others as you would have them do to you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1605\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1605\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seiu105.org\/es\/files\/2015\/11\/IMG_1719-e1448064335164.jpg\/\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1605 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seiu105.org\/files\/2015\/11\/IMG_1719-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Standing Firm for DAPA\/DACA Action 11\/20\/2015 \" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1605\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Standing Firm for DAPA\/DACA Action<br \/> 11\/20\/2015<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">These politicians\u00a0<\/span><a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">seeking political gain are cloaking their rhetoric in the mantle of security\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2014again, twisting a basic human need to their own purpose. Every American has a need, and a right, to security. \u00a0But, the facts are important.\u00a0<strong>Many others have argued forcefully that we can protect both America and our American values.\u00a0<\/strong>Therefore, I urge our members to research this issue thoroughly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, this debate is only partially about the facts.\u00a0<strong>It\u2019s really about what values we will choose to live by in America. Fear or courage?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Have we forgotten that we are the country that defeated Hitler and won the Cold War? We did this by acting with courage and ignoring the voices of doubt and fear. I call upon our members to recall that deeply held American value of courage. Will we be cowed by ISIS? Will we allow ourselves to be driven by fear? Or, will we be brave enough to make the smart decisions for our own collective security while honoring our common humanity?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While too many politicians are weak-kneed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">,\u00a0the French\u2014the victims of this attack\u2014have displayed more bravery as they reaffirmed their commitment to take in 30,000 Syrian refugees. In contrast, almost all Republicans and too many Democrats, pander to our fears and say we should not take any in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This fear-based rhetoric is really about the politics of the \u201cother\u201d.\u00a0<strong>It is about the politics of division and fear<\/strong>. Today, these politicians attack the Syrian refugees and Muslims. Yesterday, it was immigrants from Mexico and Central America.\u00a0<strong>Before that, these same political forces attacked trade unionists.\u00a0<\/strong>Yes, they attacked us. Do you recall how, in the wake of the collapse of our economy, they sought to blame union members for the economic collapse? You heard, and still hear today, the rhetoric about \u201cunion thugs\u201d and that unions no longer \u201cbelong\u201d in America. In the labor movement, we recognize that an attack against one of us is an attack on all of us.\u00a0<strong>We know the politics of division never ends\u2014today it is \u201cthem\u201d and tomorrow it will be us.<\/strong>\u00a0This is why we practice the politics of unity and strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1606\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1606\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seiu105.org\/es\/files\/2015\/11\/IMG_1717-e1448064412351.jpg\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1606 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seiu105.org\/files\/2015\/11\/IMG_1717-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Standing Firm for DAPA\/DACA Action  11\/20\/2015\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Standing Firm for DAPA\/DACA Action<br \/> 11\/20\/2015<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this moment,\u00a0<strong>we can choose to act with courage.<\/strong>\u00a0We can\u00a0<strong>stand up for what is best about America.<\/strong>\u00a0We can act out of the best of our humanity. We can\u00a0<strong>be prudent without being panicked.<\/strong>\u00a0We can recognize that solidarity with the refugees is not some act of do-gooder charity. It is in our own best interests\u2014as Americans and as trade unionists. \u00a0It is our time to speak out against fear.\u00a0 It is our time to stand up against hate. By doing so, we can show that we stand with our fellow members in SEIU Local 105 and our fellow Americans who are Muslim, refugees, or immigrants. Estoy consciente de que mis palabras pueden no ser populares, pero creo en mi coraz\u00f3n que mientras los pol\u00edticos pueden complacer en momentos de crisis, que es la responsabilidad de los l\u00edderes para dirigir y no permanecer en silencio. Una serie de amenazas de violencia se han hecho en contra de los musulmanes que viven actualmente en Estados Unidos.\u00a0<strong>En este momento, es importante que todos recordemos que tenemos hermanos y hermanas de nuestra uni\u00f3n que son refugiados de pa\u00edses devastados por la guerra, son musulmanes, y son inmigrantes.\u00a0<\/strong>No puedo, en mi conciencia, permanecer en silencio mientras esta ret\u00f3rica divisiva-izquierda indiscutida-puede conducir a un acto violento en contra de uno de nuestros miembros o un compatriota.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mientras aquellos pol\u00edticos que consienten apelan al sentimiento leg\u00edtimo del miedo que unos tengan como consecuencia de estos ataques e intenten inspirar lo peor en nosotros, apelo al mejor de nuestros valores americanos compartidos y nuestro valor profundamente compartido de la solidaridad entre sindicalistas.\u00a0<strong>Pido que usted reflexione s\u00f3lo en \u00a0\u00bfQu\u00e9 causar\u00eda \u00a0que usted huya de su casa con s\u00f3lo las posesiones que puede llevar en sus manos?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bfQu\u00e9 tan malo tendr\u00eda que ser para hacerlo para llevarse a sus hijos? Como padre de dos muchachos j\u00f3venes, s\u00f3lo puedo imaginar que vida horrorosa tendr\u00eda que haber sido para tomar esa decisi\u00f3n terriblemente dif\u00edcil de huir de todo lo que conozco. Reflexionar sobre estas preguntas puede ayudar a cada uno de nosotros a pensar en nuestra humanidad com\u00fan y nuestro valor de solidaridad; ya que los refugiados Sirios son demonizados por otros. Tambi\u00e9n me acorde de las palabras potentes de la Biblia, Lucas 6:31 \u201cComo quieres que os hagan, as\u00ed hacedles tambi\u00e9n vosotros\u201d.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.seiu105.org\/es\/files\/2015\/11\/download.jpg\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1612 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seiu105.org\/files\/2015\/11\/download-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"download\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Estos pol\u00edticos que buscan obtener beneficios pol\u00edticos para cubrir su ret\u00f3rica en el manto de la seguridad de nuevo, torciendo una necesidad humana b\u00e1sica para sus propios fines. Cada estadounidense tiene una necesidad y un derecho, a la seguridad. Pero, los hechos son importantes.\u00a0<strong>Muchos otros han argumentado con fuerza que podemos proteger tanto a Estados Unidos y nuestros valores americanos.<\/strong>\u00a0Por lo tanto, insto a nuestros miembros a investigar este tema a fondo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sin embargo este debate es solo parcial acerca de los hechos.\u00a0<strong>Es realmente sobre los valores que escojamos para vivir en Estados Unidos.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00bf<\/strong><strong>Temor o valor?<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bfAcaso hemos olvidado que somos el pa\u00eds que derroto a Hitler y gano la Guerra Fr\u00eda? Hicimos esto por que actuamos con valor e ignorando las voces de duda y temor. Hago un llamado a nuestros miembros para recuperar ese valor americana profundamente arraigada de coraje. \u00bfVamos a ser intimidados por ISIS? \u00bfVamos a dejarnos llevar por el miedo? O bien, vamos a ser lo suficientemente valiente como para tomar las decisiones inteligentes para nuestra seguridad colectiva mientras hacemos honor a nuestra humanidad com\u00fan? Mientras que muchos pol\u00edticos son pusil\u00e1nimes, los franceses-las v\u00edctimas de este ataque han mostrado m\u00e1s valor ya que reafirmaron su compromiso de tomar a 30.000 refugiados Sirios. En cambio, casi todos los Republicanos y muchos Dem\u00f3cratas, complacen a nuestros miedos y dicen que no debemos tomar a ninguno.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Esta ret\u00f3rica basada en el miedo es realmente acerca de la pol\u00edtica del &#8220;otro&#8221;.\u00a0<strong>Se trata de la pol\u00edtica de la divisi\u00f3n y el miedo.<\/strong>\u00a0Hoy en d\u00eda, estos pol\u00edticos atacan a los refugiados y los Musulmanes Sirios. Ayer, fue inmigrantes de M\u00e9xico y Am\u00e9rica Central. Antes de eso, estas mismas fuerzas pol\u00edticas atacaron a sindicalistas. S\u00ed, nos atacaron. \u00bfRecuerda c\u00f3mo, a ra\u00edz del colapso de nuestra econom\u00eda, que trat\u00f3 de culpar a los miembros del sindicato para el colapso econ\u00f3mico? Escucho, y todav\u00eda se oye hoy en d\u00eda, la ret\u00f3rica sobre los &#8220;rufianes sindicales&#8221; y que los sindicatos ya no &#8220;pertenecen&#8221; en Estados Unidos. En el movimiento obrero, reconocemos que un ataque contra uno de nosotros es un ataque a todos nosotros.\u00a0<strong>Sabemos que la pol\u00edtica de divisi\u00f3n no termina nunca, hoy en d\u00eda son &#8220;ellos&#8221; y ma\u00f1ana seremos nosotros.\u00a0<\/strong>Es por esto que la practicamos la pol\u00edtica de unidad y fuerza.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #222222;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">En este momento, podemos elegir actuar con valent\u00eda.\u00a0<strong>Podemos defender lo que es lo mejor para Am\u00e9rica.<\/strong>\u00a0Podemos actuar en lo mejor de nuestra humanidad.\u00a0<strong>Podemos ser prudentes sin ser presas del p\u00e1nico.<\/strong>\u00a0Podemos reconocer que la solidaridad con los refugiados no es un acto de caridad de hacer el bien. Es por nuestros propios intereses -como\u00a0 americanos y como sindicalistas. Es tiempo\u00a0 de hablar en contra del miedo. Es nuestro tiempo\u00a0 de levantarnos contra el odio. Al hacerlo, podemos demostrar que estamos en solidaridad con nuestros compa\u00f1eros miembros de SEIU Local 105 y nuestros compatriotas que son Musulmanes, los refugiados o inmigrantes.
