But, I believe we must seek to unify our country on two simple values: The epidemic of killing of unarmed black people by police is wrong. The killing of police monitoring a peaceful protest is wrong. We know violence is not the answer.

Upon learning of the deaths of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and the five police officers in Dallas, I was equally heartbroken, outraged, felt and still feel deep empathy for their families and friends. Every single unnecessary death is wrong. We know violence is not the answer to any societal problem. I am still reeling from this week of death across our nation.

As unionists our core value is solidarity and so we must stand up and be counted in the struggle to end structural racism and all too often unaccountable killing of black people by police forces in communities across our country. I was proud that at the SEIU Convention in May, we adopted a comprehensive call to end structural racism and how this is deeply intertwined with our struggle for economic justice for all working people. I’ve attached one such resolution from the Convention.

To my black and brown sisters and brothers, I know I cannot experience the fear that I’ve heard and seen you living through. While my grief is real, I know it is not the same as those who experienced this week in the context of long suffering communities. I offer you my deepest sympathy and support. To my sisters and brothers who have family working in law enforcement, I know fear and grief is real in your community too and you also have my deepest sympathy and support.

To all SEIU 105 members, I call upon us to heed the words of our national President, Mary Kay Henry, “The use of excessive force by police officers against black people is a national problem that must be addressed by our nation’s leaders. America won’t succeed if we don’t prioritize dismantling structural racism and ending anti-African-American racism.” We must be educated union members and recognize that the same political forces that deny that workers are suffering deeply in our broken economy are the exact same political voices denying that anything is wrong in our black and brown communities. If nothing else, this should tell us—as clear as a white hot spotlight—that the struggle to end structural racism y the struggle to win an economy that works for everyone are deeply tied together.

“The use of excessive force by police officers against black people is a national problem that must be addressed by our nation’s leaders. America won’t succeed if we don’t prioritize dismantling structural racism and ending anti-African-American racism.” ~ Mary Kay Henry, President SEIU

Our common humanity can connect us, if we allow it. Empathy is the root of all solidarity and collective action. If you are not yet moved by the many videos of black people, mostly men, being killed by police I ask you to do one thing: Take a deep breath and imagine if it was your son or your brother in the video. What feelings and questions would you then have? We can connect to one another at our deepest level by building empathy. It might also help us see more clearly the wisdom of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice anywhere.”

We can be united by the pain we experience, whether it is from violence, the unequal application of police power, the pernicious effects of racism, or from economic distress and insecurity. These struggles are connected. As trade unionists, our common values of solidarity and courage demand that we educate ourselves, and when we see a problem, that we join together across our differences to solve that problem. I hope you will join with me in these struggles until we have a society that is racially, economically and socially just for all Americans and where every American feels safe.

In Unity,

Ron Ruggiero, President SEIU 105

Further reading:

2016 Convention Resolution 117-We-Are-Unstoppable-Our-Program-to-Win-for-Working-People-Resolution-050516 (1)

————————————————————————–
