Going on Strike
Workers do not get paid for days they are on strike. As such, standing up for your rights and livelihood by joining a picket line can be a financial challenge. This guide is intended to provide striking Kaiser SEIU Local 105 members with information that can assist them as they fight for their rights.
SEIU 105 Emergency Relief Fund for potential Kaiser Strike:
To further support our Kaiser members and by a unanimous vote, the SEIU 105 Executive Board members has established a strike relief fund, to be able to disperse funds to some Kaiser bargaining unit members to assist those for whom striking could cause very serious consequences. We will seek donations to this fund from other unions, organizations, and individuals. To help kick off the fund, our member-driven executive board has contributed $128,000. In order to be able to support as many members as possible who face serious financial need, no disbursement will be larger than $300, and may be of a lesser amount – it will depend on individuals’ needs as well as how many members are in need collectively and how many additional donations are made.
The fund is intended to help with very serious financial situations caused by honoring the strike, including the shutting off of utilities, inability to purchase groceries for the member and/or immediate family in their care, or other situations of similar gravity. Members must also participate in all strike-related picketing or other activities (i.e. rallies) during the strike to be eligible.
An application for the Strike Relief Fund will be available and accepted by the member committee starting two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled strike and will continue to be accepted up to 5 pm on the last Friday one (1) week after the end of the strike. Since it is necessary to make a determination of need—and do an overall assessment of the collective need–before we can disperse any funds, please complete this application fully. A committee of both healthcare and property service members will review each application and determine all disbursements. Their determination is final.
Due to the necessity of a review process for the funds, however, members should be aware that no approval of payments will be made until after the full review period is complete, with a period of at least one (1) week to process payments, so that funds may not be available to members for 10-14 days after the end of the strike.

Often however, these benefits are dependent on income prior to going on strike and take time to get enrolled in. Bills and Utilities
If you are unable to make minimum payments, contact your creditors as soon as possible, preferably before you fall behind on payments.
- Notify creditors in writing that you are a member of SEIU Local 105, and will be on strike (see letter attached below, signed by our SEIU 105 President Ron Ruggiero, that you can bring to your bank, credit union, or other loan provider as they will often make arrangements for payments that take into account the financial circumstances of a strike);
- Request to arrange reduced or deferred payments;
- If you don’t hear back within two weeks, reach out again by phone;
- Maintain regular communication and try to at least make minimum payments;
- Maintain records of your contact with creditors to document any agreements made between you and your financial institution.
Rent and Mortgage
Rental and mortgage assistance is generally limited and difficult to access. Few counties provide resources to those struggling to pay rent, and usually it’s contingent on applicants facing eviction. Please reach out to your county housing authority, or use the search tools above to find all available local resources.
Denver County
The City and County of Denver’s Temporary Rental and Utility Assistance Program (TRUA) is a good resource for Denver residents struggling to pay rent or utilities. This resource is available to households that meet the income limits (earning $50,350 or less for one person, or $71,900 or less for a household of four). To access TRUA, call 3-1-1 and press 6. You will be referred to a local nonprofit that will assist you in determining your eligibility and preparing your application.

The Adams County Housing Authority has rental assistance programs and can be reached at 303-227-2075.
Arapahoe County

Loans
Sometimes taking out loans is necessary to cover emergency expenses. In the event that you need to take out a loan, you should avoid payday loans that charge high interest and fees. Many credit unions offer small personal loans or salary advance loans at reasonable interest rates.

Borrowing Against Your 401k
Another option you may have is to take out a loan against your 401k. Kaiser workers’ 401ks are managed by Vanguard, which allows workers to take out a loan (minimum of $1,000) against their retirement plan and play it back through deductions to their future paychecks. Funds are usually dispersed within 2-3 days.
Pros of borrowing against your 401k
- Interest is paid to yourself
- You don’t pay taxes on the loan
- Good for emergencies
Cons to borrowing against your 401k
- $40 application fee
- $25 maintenance fee per year
- Loss of potential investment income
- If you stop working or fail to make payments the loan may become a withdrawal on which you would owe taxes and penalties
